Art Workshops for Schools

Hands-on painting workshops for grades 6–12, taught on-site in the Capital District by Cohoes, NY artist Kristofer McDermott (Kriztix Art).

How it works

Pick a workshop or pitch your own idea.
Check the availability calendar and send a request.
I'll reply with a quote and a plan for your classes. I work with BOCES Arts in Education POs.
Once we agree to work together, I email your teacher the prerequisite videos. For a brand-new custom workshop, the prerequisite video arrives 2 to 4 weeks before class, and the in-class videos at least 24 hours before.
1 to 4 weeks before class, I drop off a materials and info package: the canvases, the stencils, the supplies for the prerequisite work, and a binder with an inventory of any loaned items, color sheets, the schedule and mock-ups. Schools too far to drive to get it shipped.
On workshop day, I bring any premium materials and the last handouts, and I teach. The school provides the paint, and you bring the students.

Spray Can Painting (1 day)

Students paint a spray can in acrylic on an 8x10 canvas panel in a single day. Working from the school's base paint colors, they mix their own shades and highlights, guided by loaned stencils (freehand optional), an outline video they watch beforehand and a narrated in-class video.

Monster Emoji Workshop (2-day residency)

Over two days, students design and paint a monster emoji face on canvas, using the stencil library, color and mixing sheets, marker swatch cards, a student cheat sheet, the Artistro marker kit and the Day 1 and Day 2 videos. Available year-round.

Pitch an idea

Good to know

Grades 6–12; works with classes up to about 30 students.
Needs a projector that can play YouTube or a USB/memory card.
The school provides the acrylic paint. Students start from base colors and mix their own shades and highlights, all in the same class. A premium paint upgrade is optional.
Stencil-assisted drawing means every student finishes a piece they're proud of.
No student faces are ever photographed or filmed.

Pricing

School workshops from $1,800 per day (up to 3 classes).

One-day workshops: $1,800 for up to 3 classes, then $600 per class. A full day of 5 classes is $3,000.
Residencies: from $3,000 for 2 days (up to 5 classes each day), plus $600 per extra class, per day. Each added day is $1,500.

For all workshops

Materials included (the school provides paint). BOCES POs welcome. Travel expenses are added for locations more than an hour from Cohoes, NY. Prices are subject to change based on each school's unique needs, including changes to the supply list or teaching technique. Any damage to loaned materials must be compensated.

I'm Kristofer McDermott, a Cohoes, NY artist with over 20 years of making art. It started at age 4, when a street artist drew a portrait of me and my mom. Since then I've live painted at Art Basel, curated live art at Capital Region festivals, and painted murals around Troy. Today Kriztix Art is focused on two things: teaching hands-on workshops for schools, and making original paintings and limited-edition and digital prints for my online shop. Murals are reserved for a select few clients.
